What is AVIF and why is it everywhere now?
AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is a modern image format based on the AV1 video codec. It typically produces files 30-50% smaller than JPG at the same visual quality, with better support for transparency and HDR than JPG or WebP. Major sites and CDNs are switching to it as a default.
Why convert AVIF to JPG?
Compatibility. AVIF is not yet universally supported — Safari only added AVIF in version 16 (Sept 2022), some Linux image viewers don't open it, many CMS plugins don't preview it, and a handful of social platforms reject it on upload. Converting to JPG eliminates these friction points.
Does the conversion lose quality?
JPG is JPG uses lossy compression, so some artifacts are possible. We default to quality 92 which is visually indistinguishable from the AVIF source on most images. The canvas re-encode is a single round-trip, not a multi-generation copy.
Is everything really processed locally?
Yes. Your browser already supports AVIF natively (assuming Chrome 85+, Firefox 93+, or Safari 16+). We use that built-in decoder, then canvas.toBlob() for JPG export. No network upload at any step.
What's the file size limit?
There is no artificial limit. The practical limit is your device's RAM — modern hardware comfortably handles AVIF images in the 10-50 MB range.
