When to choose PNG over JPG
PNG is lossless: every pixel from the original HEIC decode is preserved exactly. Choose PNG when you'll edit the photo further (each JPG re-save loses more quality), when you need transparency support (HEIC photos don't include transparency, but PNG preserves any future edits with alpha), or when the destination explicitly demands PNG. The trade-off is file size — PNG files are typically 3-5x larger than equivalent JPGs.

Why PNG instead of JPG for HEIC conversion?
Choose PNG when you need lossless quality — for editing, archiving, print, or technical documentation. PNG preserves every pixel exactly; JPG re-encodes the photo, introducing small compression artifacts that compound with each re-save.
How much bigger will my PNGs be compared to HEIC?
Typically 5-10x larger. HEIC uses HEVC compression at roughly half the size of a quality-92 JPG. PNG is lossless, so a 2 MB HEIC may produce a 15-20 MB PNG. If file size matters and you don't need lossless, use HEIC to JPG instead.
Does the output PNG include transparency?
iPhone HEIC photos don't have transparency, so the PNG output is fully opaque. PNG supports transparency, so if you later edit the file and remove a background, that will be preserved.
Is everything really processed locally?
Yes. The decoder is libheif compiled to WebAssembly, running in your browser tab. There is no network upload of your photo at any step. You can verify in DevTools — Network tab shows no outbound photo traffic.
